Freeport NY Yellow Pages

Freeport is a village in Hempstead in the southwestern section of Nassau County. The southern most part of the village is home to a large array of canals that allow access to the Atlantic Ocean via salt marshes. The oldest canal is Woodcleft created in the late 19 th century. Prior to the 1600’s Freeport was a part of the area known as Great South Woods at which time it was changed to Raynor South and then Raynortown after Edward Raynor that built a cabin here in 1659. The residents of the area voted to name the area Freeport in 1853 after the name used by ship captains that were not charged customs duties to land their cargo. In 1892, Freeport became incorporated. After the Civil War, the oyster industry was the major industry which declined around the beginning of the 20th century.

Freeport is home to quality schools including Archer Street, Bayview Avenue, Caroline G. Atkinson Intermediate School, Columbus Avenue, Leo F. Giblyn, New Visions, J. W. Dodd Middle School, and Freeport High School. As well as providing quality education opportunities Freeport also is home its own fire station, police station, water department, and electric department. The Freeport Mall is a huge draw to the area offering an open air market.

The most popular attraction in Freeport is The Nautical Mile where residents and visitors enjoy live music, sidewalks lined with antique light pots, benches, and potted plants.
